RELEASES 🌱

Mystica Tribe ~ Midnight Mirage 7" [MG003]
Released December 2024 ~ Limited edition 200 x 7"
Available now vinyl at Juno
Tokyo based Mystica Tribe is an electronic producer and melodica player who blends his own unique 'Far Eastern' dub style reggae with techno. He heads up his own label but has also dropped heat on the likes of The Hague's SD and here brings the heat to a vital new 7" on Jamie McCue's Moon Garden. 'Rising Tide Dub' has lush harmonica leads and oodles of echo and reverb that sinks you in deep to the cavernous bass. 'Current Swell Dub' then steps it back to an even more silky and liquid rhythm with dainty chords and gentle dynamic drums. Both these cuts are heady and soulful in equal measure.

Hidden Sequence ~ Silent Roots [MG002]
Released September 2024 ~ Limited edition 200 x 7"
Sold out
Silent Season sub-label Moon Garden strikes quickly after their opening volley from Japanese producer Silentwave, a deep listening ambient album issued on cassette this past summer. With the smaller sized formats as Moon Garden’s preference thus far, their second offering is a 7” single from the German duo Hidden Sequence, a name which might be a familiar name to those invested in contemporary dub techno. Through their trio of releases issued on the top tier dub techno imprint Lempuyang, Hidden Sequence are among a newer crowd of dub techno enthusiasts like Frenk Dublin and SND & RTN who are fully immersed into the smokier side of the genre. Here, the duo remove the techno aspect while maintaining their dank density, Mystical Dub taking us on a slight detour towards the style of dub that had previously been perfected by Rhythm & Sound. With a heavy emphasis on atmosphere, the single’s two tracks embellish their roots-informed samples of faded horns and trippy vocals snippets with an orb-y wall of riddems and smoke-blessed FX, arriving somewhere close to the warm but wall-shaking releases that we’ve been enamoured with from Froid Dub or Mystica Tribe, the latter of whom are fittingly up next on the Moon Garden release schedule!

Audiopile Review: One of our favourite labels of all time is Silent Season, the dub techno, ambient and spacey electronica imprint run from the nearby Comox Valley for the past 17 years. While we’ve eagerly awaited for a new vinyl release from them (heck, would love to see some reissues too), it seems that the label has decided to remain dormant for the time being. That said, a new sub-label has now popped up in its stead, a newly minted “small format” imprint named Moon Garden. The maiden voyage comes courtesy of Japanese ambient/dub techno/experimental producer Silentwave, who has been a low-key but prolific figure in the electronic underground for a decade now. With dozens of releases across every format, the producer (real name Yoshinori Noguchi) has been on a particularly noteworthy run over the past year or so, issuing releases for cult labels like Nouvelle Gaze and Greyscale. Never settling on any one genre, he fluidly moves between styles, always angling for an immersive experience with whatever he decides to tackle. And for Moon Garden’s debut release, Noguchi does indeed go deep. Reeeeally deep. The tape is two side long pieces that run at approximately 40 minutes each, Noguchi using the luxurious, uninterrupted length allowed on a cassette release to create a truly enveloping work. The A-side, “Fire”, is a densely layered epic of bliss-y, angelic drones, recalling Stars of the Lid at their most ascendent, while the B-side reflects a more subdued approach, its series of sustained tones slowly rising and falling like galactic breath, an easy comedown after the hair-raising grandeur of “Fire”. An incredible start to Moon Garden and the newest win from Silentwave. Stayed tuned for a few more Silentwave cassette releases coming your way over the next few weeks. Also keep your eyes peeled for a forthcoming Moon Garden 7” from the atmospheric dub duo Hidden Sequence!
